Black History Month: MLK & Southern Food Tours

Standard DreamTrip
Tour important historic sites — including the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr. — during Black History Month & gain a deeper understanding of the impact of the civil rights movement. Plus, go on an exciting culinary journey with a walking food tour — samples of Southern favorites included! Book by December 13.

About Your Trip

Make it a meaningful Black History Month with 2 incredible experiences in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s one of the cities at the center of America’s civil rights movement and a culinary powerhouse where expressions of Southern Black culture can be found in its many wonderful food traditions.

Start with a fun and tasty walking food tour, where you’ll get a glimpse into the heart of soul food and other essential Southern cuisine. This highly rated guided excursion combines food, history and compelling narratives — did you know Martin Luther King Jr. was a foodie? — to capture the story of Atlanta. Along the way, you’ll have a chance to try staples like hoecakes, fried chicken, pralines and grits, with enough samples to make up a delectable lunch.

The following day, you’ll go on an inspirational guided walking tour that honors the important work of activists and civil rights leaders, highlighting historic buildings and places central to the movement. See the birthplace — and final resting place — of Dr. King and the church where he co-pastored with his father. You’ll also take in the phenomenal views at Jackson Street Bridge. Other stops along the way include Prince Hall Grand Lodge, a gathering place for Black activists during the fight for civil rights, a city plaza dedicated to civic leader John Wesley Dobbs and the former beauty salon operated by Madam CJ Walker, first female self-made millionaire in America.

The rest of your DreamTrip offers plenty of leisure time so you can do as much — or as little — as you want. Stay close to your hotel to relax, or head out to see some of the city’s top attractions, such as the Georgia Aquarium and Fernbank® Museum of Natural History.

What we love:
• Hoecakes are pancake-shaped delights made from unleavened cornbread. Be sure to try them during your stop at Metro Deli & Soul Food — your taste buds and stomach will thank you!
• From the hotel’s lobby, look skyward to get a full appreciation of its 52-story atrium, an architectural marvel that spans the entire height of the building at 470 feet (143 meters) high.
• To maximize your enjoyment, download the DreamTrips™ app to access DreamTrips Local — then earn points on dining, entertainment, spa experiences & more at select spots recommended by DreamTrippers just like you!
